Garvaghy road parade probable

The 32csm in North Armagh take this opportunity to urge the republican and nationalist communities in Portadown and the surrounding area to prepare for the probable forcing of the sectarian orange march down the Garvaghy road this year.

We believe that there is currently a behind the scenes effort by some within the community to manufacture a consensus for this very outcome.

It may be that one of the conditions for the continuation of the smooth administration of British rule in Stormont is to resolve this issue in a way favourable to the Orange order and ultimately at the expense of the republican base and the wider nationalist community - the very people who gave their support to the struggle throughout the years.

We call on local people not to rely on the establishment parties but instead organise themselves to oppose this sectarian and triumphalist parade through their area. We in the republican movement believe that the nationalist/republican community should not tolerate such a parade being forced through our area and we will stand with them in their efforts to oppose it.

Your belief that there is currently a behind the scenes effort by some within the Garvaghy Road community to manufacture a consensus for an Orange parade is much mistaken. Both Garvaghy Residents Coalition and Lower Ormeau Community in Belfast publicly rejected recommendations made by the Strategic Review Body on Parades (see Irish News full page article April 29th).

And the GRRC are currently circulating a petition around the area opposing any notion of Orange marches along either the Garvaghy Road or Obins Street which I'm told is being very widely supported.

Your statement about "behind the scenes efforts by some within the community" only undermines the solidarity, unity and strength of Portadown people on this issue and serves no-one except those who would seek to create and maintain a fiction that the residents are split on this issue.

Even Spike and other senior Shinners found out at a meeting with their own people in Portadown recently that deals linking policing and justice to parades was a complete non-starter. Indeed, they were essentially told to f*** off back to Belfast.

So any moves are not coming from WITHIN the community but externally. You should correct that part of your blog and not give any succour to the Orange.

I think community referred to the "nationalist community" thus the claim in the statement that it was the same community which supported the struggle for years.

The main jist of the statement however was proven correct today when it came out that Adams has been in meetings with the OO in Portadown.
